Giulio Deangeli
What were you doing before you joined the MRC-DTP?
I completed my medical training at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, and the University of Pisa. In parallel to my MD, I completed 4 further degrees, namely Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Biotechnologies, Master in Molecular Biotechnologies, and Sant’Anna School Master in Medical Sciences. Further to that, I was an intern at Harvard, and worked at the Harvard Stem Cell institute and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Cambridge?
The University of Cambridge offers a unique scientific environment, which fosters out-of-the-box thinking, multidisciplinarity and leadership. Before coming back for my PhD, I had already had the honour of attending the Spillantini Lab at the University of Cambridge, as a summer student, in 2016. I decided to come back to the same lab, to pursue my PhD in Clinical Neurosciences.
What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day work and the people you work with?
The opportunity to learn from world-level, talented scientists. The exchange of valuable scientific insight. The outstanding friendliness and helpfulness, that is shared across the entire group. And the pleasant, constructive human environment, which allows everyone of us to give our best. Learning new skills is a daily occurrence in science. Being able to learn from the best is a privilege which wouldn’t be possible without the support from MRC-DTP.
What do you most value about your MRC-DTP Studentship?
The MRC-DTP programme is much more than a scholarship. It is a community of engaged, passionate scientists; interacting with such a brilliant cohort of fellow students has been a tremendous opportunity of growth. Also, I very much valued the support that the Studentship provided in the extracurricular programmes, such as EnterpriseTECH – a valuable, life-changing opportunity that the University of Cambridge offers to students, which was fully funded by MRC-DTP for all their scholars.
Have you had any internships or high-level training and if so, can you describe their benefits to you?
I addended many of the courses offered by the Bioinformatics Training Centre, which provided invaluable insight in the state-of-the-art methods and best practices, to analyse various types of omics data. I completed the EnterpriseTECH programme at the Judge Business School, which helped me appreciate how close the world of science is to that of enterprise. I was selected as one of the 14 EnterpriseTECH STARs, in the 2022 cohort. I attended the training course on the Nanostring GeoMx platform.
What do you plan to do after your graduate?
I plan to continue my research work, in the biomedical and artificial intelligence fields.
